EOC: Wk 9 "Network"

The film “Network” (1976) deals with how the social media dictates what we the people view on television, radio, etc. While watching this film you may not realize the hidden messages you would see if you have not taken this marketing research class. You can see how they research different segments of the news and programming to see what would get the ratings and attention of consumers so they stay afloat and on top of their game.

Faye Dunaway’s character depicts a woman obsessed with ratings and programming. You see her contacting different states to see how the ratings are and if the show is taking off or not. You have to be fully dedicated to this research and engulf yourself in it. She conducts primary research but in a different way I think. She gets hints or ideas that no one else sees and can visualize a show from it. It may be assumed to be secondary because its ideas from other people but I see it as primary because the ones originally thinking f this idea have no clue this is a great idea; Perfect for ratings.

They use newspapers, radicals any one that can easily have a story and could possibly gain popularity and ratings. But once ratings drop you can see they even do research to how to end a show. In this case killing off the host was the only way they thought possible. It was a convenient way to get ratings, and get rid of the show. Unbelievable of how networks work and how they research their audience and how to grab ratings.

BOC: Wk 9 Nielsen Ratings

"The proliferation of new media technologies and devices is empowering people to become their own programmers, develop their own playlists, and create personalized media portals. These changes create an increasingly challenging environment for capturing a greater share of market and monetizing your audience effectively.

How can you extract more value from your content and optimize your ad sales yield? How do you measure the quality of your audience, not just the quantity? How do you adapt to the dynamically changing marketplace in advance of your competitors?

Look to Nielsen to help you understand your viewers or listeners - and your industry - in new and more profitable ways. We invite you to get to know them as consumers and to understand them so completely and deeply that you'll be able to anticipate their next move. Our unmatched media industry expertise and leadership, deep understanding of consumer media consumption and behavior across all platforms, and innovative research and measurement tools position us to help you achieve your goals. We will collaborate with you to develop the right strategies so you can overcome the challenges you face across media today.

Whether your business is movie studios, radio stations, online portals, a new cable network or a local affiliate - Nielsen will provide the insights that let you know more, see what's next and move forward confidently."(http://en-us.nielsen.com/content/nielsen/en_us/industries/media.html)javascript:void(0)

In my own terms for understanding what Nielsen ratings are is generally an effort to determine the audience size and composition of television programming in the United States.

Market Research: Fashion Q

Fashion Q @ Galleria Mall

Manager- Jamika

After visiting Fashion Q at the Galleria Mall in Henderson I soon realized this store needs help. Their clothes are great for this economy because they are cheap but location is in a “dead zone”. I believe if they made the store more visually pleasing and their employees were more cooperative to customer service we could gather more foot traffic in this store. Their sales seem to be as most of the other stores but sometimes when people or even myself walk in to Fashion Q it seems like a flea market; a color coded flea market.

I conducted already basic research without a survey just to get a feel of how their current customers react to this store. Recorded below are their testimonials:

“Now, I am an extreme fashionista and I prefer name brands, but Fashion Q is not a bad store if you are a gal on a budget. There are very cute clothes that are flattering to many people. In addition their purses and accessories are always following the latest fashion trends! Look cute for less!"(Amanda C, 24, Henderson, NV)

This store is just ok. A lot of the items are cheaply made. Good place to go if you need a last minute club outfit.” (Gina A, 19, Henderson, NV)

“Best kept secret. This place is great. The store keeps up with the latest styles/fashion and at great prices. I spent a couple of hours in the store last week and only stopped shopping because I had to go somewhere. Cheap prices, but the clothing doesn't look cheap. Just make sure you have a little time to shop around. The salespeople are NOT the friendliest, but there's a lot to choose from.” (Vicki M, 28, Henderson, NV)

“The afternoon manager is rude, uneducated, untrained, no people skills.” (Katylin T, 31, Henderson, NV)

Now that was only 5 personal statements and I can see where these ladies came from. To be able to improve their business and have more customers with stand the walk to Fashion Q I have chosen a type of sampling called non-probability sampling. It is less expensive than probability sampling and in this economy less expensive is golden ticket.

Fashion Q: Non-probability Survey

1. Does the location of a store predict where you will shop?

2. How does the visual aspect affect your shopping?

3. If more promotions were offered would you consider walking to this store?

4. Does color coding heighten your experience?

5. How important is customer service?

6. Does customer service help, hinder or doesn’t matter your experience?

7. How important is great deals?

8. First impressions are important in shopping?

9. Would you tell friends to visit this store?

10. How often do you shop?

11. How often do you shop at Fashion Q?

12. When coming to the mall is this a destination spot?

EOC: Wk 8 Mr. Clean Jeans

1.HOW DO YOU WASH A PAIR OF JEANS TO KEEP THE EXPERIENCE A DESIGNER WANTED YOU TO HAVE?

If you want your favorite jeans to last a long time, don’t just treat them like any other article of clothing. A little extra care when washing your jeans can go a long way in extending their life and good looks.

The first thing to do to take care of our jeans which may be surprising to us is to let them get dirty. Don't just let them get dirty, but don't wash them. This isn't to say you should roll around in the mud, we are talking the kind of dirty that occurs with natural wear. This is especially important if we have purchased the dark stiff jeans that feel like they were over-starched. Any jeans aficionado will tell you the more you wear your jeans between washings the longer they will last and the better they will fit. This good fit not only feels better but looks better. Washing after every wear doesn't allow jeans to conform to your body. It's not unusual for some men to go a couple of months between laundering. You don't have to be that extreme, but a general rule of thumb is that washing every five wears is acceptable to keep your jeans healthy and fitting correctly.

I tend to wash my jeans in the washer machine and dry in the dryer so I can shrink out the newly worn jean fabric. This way I can get my tight fit back to how I originally had the jeans when they were first purchased. I do not care to air dry my jeans, I do not get the tight feeling back nor the softness I would get if they were in the dryer. With that said if you are wearing stretch jeans which are basically just a woman's style, wash these jeans a lot! These should be washed at least every week if not after every other wearing. The whole point of stretch jeans is a tight but comfortable fit which looks like the old 70's - 80's style without needing pliers to pull up the zipper. If you want to keep the snug fit this is a must.

Finally turn your jeans inside out and only use a regular liquid laundry detergent. Powdered detergents sometimes cling to denim and cause splotches or hard spots on the fabric after drying. That holds true even if jeans are turned inside out. Never wash your jeans at a temperature higher than warm.

If I do have a pair of designer jeans I would probably wash them the same way, however I would never buy a designer pair of jeans. I think paying over $30 is ridiculous on a pair of jeans. Jeans that you wear and wear and then fall apart, and then you just re-buy again.

But I did research the proper way of washing jeans and I think I am on the right path. But if you really need to be on point the very first step to care for your jeans is simple, read the care label.

EOC: Wk 6 -Nevadans Say Income Tax Cuts Should Stay

One way or another the government will surely find a way to either keep helping the fortunate people and screwing the less fortunate or it will finally hit even or major rock bottom. This article debates whether the income tax should stay but all you ever hear is that its about to expire. Most reports are not giving the full question or answer to how we should go about deciding the solution to this problem.

When first hearing of the tax cuts should stay you would automatically say yes, I want them to stay but what we don’t read is that if they stay the wealthy are making it out alive and richer than ever. In this situation no one is safe or in the right. The government tries every way to screw people. A lot of resources and even the companies that are making the poles are saying that it should stay because if it not only the rich are going to be paying more but every American will be paying more. Other sources say that I shouldn't stay because the rich people are going to be paying low taxes when they don't deserve it, but yet they think only the rich people are going to be affected by this.

I think these polls are useless because the government is going to do what they want in the end and we really will have no say in the matter. It just sucks because we the people feel we have a say but in truth we don’t. Majority rules and most majorities are congressmen and ladies. The people just are the favored votes, not the real votes.

EOC: Reasoning Behind Poll Choices

The reason behind my poll choices comes from my personal thoughts and what I want to see how others interpret my polls and how they answer them. I chose simple topics but topics that certain people debate daily or monthly. I know that I debate cutting my hair then keeping it long. I also change my nail polish every few days or weekly. I just wonder how others thought process works on what could be a simple decision be more monumental that perceived to be.

For me getting my hair cut is a big deal. Not many hairdressers know exactly how to cut curly hair, therefore I have to integrate them and see if they are skilled enough not to mess up my curly locks. Or the most part I have had only one great stylist who could cut my hair to perfection and he unfortunately lives in Orlando.

But I love changing my nail color weekly, and if I have time. I feel it lets me show my personality even though I may not be able to verbally. It’s a great way of expressing yourself and if you are a shy person it lets you have a voice but not an over powering one that might make you feel vulnerable.
